Ribbon Descriptions

There are two major classifications of ribbons on the market - woven edge and cut-edge, also referred to as craft ribbon. Wove edge ribbons are woven on a loom and have finished selvedges or edges, therefore they are suitable for stitch down application for apparel and crafts. They are usually washable and drycleanable. When using ribbon on a project that is to be washed we recommend that you prewash both the fabric and the ribbon. Within the classification of woven ribbon you will find many of the ribbons we've used in this book for the variety of items featured. These include the wire-edge woven ribbons which have a thin copper wire woven into the edges, sheer ribbons, metallic ribbons printed and patterned ribbons. If you are not sure, just look for the finished selvedge like you would find on the edge of fabric.

The other type of ribbon, cut-edge or craft ribbon, is made from fabric that has been slit into ribbon widths and treated with a stiffening agent to give it body. This ribbon is suitable for craft and floral type projects and can be glued or wired as desired. This ribbon is not recommended for apparel or craft projects that are to be washed. Within this category, you will also find a wired ribbon. This is called a merrowed edge wire ribbon because the wire has been attached through a merrowing stitching process that finishes the slit or cut edge of the ribbon. Cotton print ribbons, textured ribbons, and other novelties are among those you will find in the cut-edge craft ribbon classification.
